1.  Getting Started

a)  How to start using the site

The site can be accessed via the URL www.plymouth-informed.org.uk.  From the homepage of this site you can be taken straight into the ‘data area’ without the need to logon or register.  You do have the option to register however by clicking on the button ‘New Users’ – see also ‘Registering as a user’ below.

It's quick and easy to start using Plymouth Informed. As you've found this page you are well on you way to discovering the powerful functionality provided by this site.

The map is displayed using a Java Applet. This allows use to provide clearer maps and allow you to interact with them (ie. so you can click on the map and move around). Each time you visit the site the first time a map is displayed you may see a security warning like that shown below. This confirms to you that the applet has been provided by Intergraph and is free from viruses or other security hazards.

Click yes to accept this certificate and the map will be displayed. The applet is approximately 180kb in size and will take about 30 seconds to download on a 56k modem. You only need to download this once per visit. If you don't want to see this warning again select the 'Always trust content from Intergraph Corporation' option before clicking the ‘Yes’ button.

Before you go any further it is worth checking that you system meets our technical requirements. You can do so by reading the following:

b)  System requirements

The Plymouth Informed website tries to be as accessible as possible. However in order to provide the level of functionality it does, it requires that your browser has the following pre-requisites.

Java - This site uses a Java Applet to display the map. An applet is a small program that runs within your browser. In order for this program to run a Java ‘virtual machine’ must be available. This is typically installed with you browser or operating system. You will need to make sure that your browser settings also allow Java applets to be run.

JavaScript - JavaScript is a programming language, which allows small programs to be run within your browser. This site makes extensive use of JavaScript to provide the interactive content. You should ensure that your browser settings allow JavaScript to be run. Older browser versions do not have support for JavaScript, see browser versions below.

Screen Resolution - The site has been designed to be used on screen resolutions of 800 x 600 or higher. However due to the volume of information we want to provide you may need to scroll down the page to see everything.

Browser Versions - This site has been optimised for users of Internet Explorer version 5 (IE5) or above. Users of other browsers may not see the content correctly or certain functions may not be available.

Cookies - Your browser must be ready to accept cookies. Cookies are small text files holding information that can be used to remember who you are and what you like. This site uses cookies to store you user name so we can remember who you are. You can find out more about cookies at cookie central.

Frames - Frames are used in this site to divide the screen between control options and the map. Your browser must be able to support frames. Most modern browsers support frames.
