How to find some statistics or information
a)
Statistics
Once
you have clicked on 'Enter the Site' from the homepage, you will be
taken to the map page. In the left hand column you
will see a heading entitled 'Statistics'. Below this you will
see a number of themes - crime, health, education etc. By clicking
on one of these themes you will see datasets 'open' up beneath it.
Clicking on one of these datasets will allow you to see them on a
map base. It will take a few seconds for the map to
generated. The animated i
logo
indicates that the map and dataset is being drawn down from the
server. The map will now be delivered in the map frame or
window as a thematic map - a map displaying the data values as
coloured or hatched areas. A key will be displayed telling you
what these values are and by placing the cursor over the map, values
will also be displayed.
You
now have various map tool functions open for you to use. You
can zoom in and move around the map as explained under 'How to
navigate around the maps'. As the colour blocks the map out
you will see on the key small squares next to the colours. By
clicking on these you will find that the colour 'toggles' off and
on.
You
can also add boundaries to the map and change the map style - as
explained under 'How to
navigate around the maps'.
b)
Information
In the
right hand column you
will see a heading entitled 'Information'. Below this you will
see a number of datasets. These are all point data -
indicating a feature or service. Clicking on one of these will allow you to see them on a
map base. It will take a few seconds for the map to
generated. The animated i
logo
indicates that the map and dataset is being drawn down from the
server. The map will now be delivered in the map frame or
window with all the information features showing. A key will be displayed telling you
what these are.
You
now have various map tool functions open for you to use. You
can zoom in and move around the map as explained under 'How to
navigate around the maps'. By placing the cursor over the information
feature (point) you will see the name of the feature displayed (ie. the name of a library). By clicking twice
on the feature you will
see an information box with much more detailed
information about that feature (ie. the location, phone number and
opening hours of the library). You can print from this information
box.

You
can also add boundaries to the map and change the map style - as
explained under 'How to
navigate around the maps'.
c)
Metadata
Each
one of the datasets as mentioned above (Statistics and Information)
has 'metadata' attached to it. Metadata is information about data -
for example who owns the data, when it was last updated, the type of
data etc. You can view this information by clicking on the
icon next to the specific dataset as displayed.
Advanced
users can search the metadata catalogue on the site. Go into 'About
data' on the homepage and follow the instructions under
'Metadata'. This allows you to carry out a detailed search of
all data on the site.
d)
View Data
At
the foot of
the left hand column you
will see a button entitled 'View Data'. This
only activated when you have called up a Statistic dataset and it is
displayed on a map. Clicking on this button will take you to a
window showing what this dataset looks like in basic tabular format.
e)
View Graph

Also
at the foot of the left hand column you
will see a button entitled 'View Graph'. This
only activated when you have called up a Statistic dataset and it is
displayed on a map. Clicking on this button will take you to a
window showing what this dataset looks like as a simple
histogram.
f)
Area Based Reports
This
area of the site has a library of 'Area Based
Reports'. These are various reports from the city-wide 'City
Strategy' to detailed reports on perhaps just a single neighbourhood.
Some documents may not be stored on the site as they are not
available electronically. However you will be told of how to
obtain or view such a report.
Go
into 'Reports' on the homepage and follow the instructions under
'Area Based Reports'. This allows you to carry out a detailed
search of all reports contained on the site. You will be taken through a 3
step process to find a report.
Step
1 is to locate the type of area you want the report for - city-wide,
ward, neighbourhood, Area Based Initiative etc.
Step
2 is to select the specific area you are interested in (ie. Sutton
ward).
Step
3 is to view that report. If it
is available electronically it will be delivered in either Adobe
Acrobat (pdf) or as a Word file (doc).
Please
contact us if you
have any relevant documents you wish to have included in this area of
the site.
